Five Drugs , The Body & Harry Snows Baby.
Not so much a tour but this trip certainly feels like a week long journey to
all corners of the country.
Theres an unknown mystery that occurs to healthy and sane minded people when
they set foot inside the Drugs tour van, The Silver Slit.
Even worse is what happens to the unhealthy and insane members of the Drugs.
The Drugs set off on our journey to Port Mac very early on Saturday morning
accompanied by the Captain, Cordless & John Citizen jam packed into the
silver slit and heading up the Pacific Hwy.
The Lads from Peabody were traveling in our storage trailer making sure our
equipment got neither wet or damaged.
The Drugs tour van can easily be divided into 3 sections:
1st Section – The Members Stand
Reserved for chats about some dead batsman from the 60’s & Gay Waterhouses
latest Mare.
David Live & the Captain kept the TAB and Gamblers Anonamous in business up
in the front section of the Van by making calls to their bookie and
listening to the dog races at Dapto on their wireless.
2nd Section – Economy Class
Certain to always include Ian Baddley, a much more realxed section of the
van, often includes people sleeping for prolonged periods of time but prone
to sudden outbursts of road rage and are always the target of practical
jokes.
3rd Section – The Back Room
Basically where the rest of the band hides out, always an abundance of
alcohol present and full of bad jokes and potty humour. I always seem to end
up in the back room pretending to laugh at Harry Snows politically incorrect
jokes, and passing Traxy another cold one.
Arriving in the lovely seaside town of Port Mac and tonights accomodation
the East Port Motor Inn we get to have a brief rest before we head to
tonights venue which is hosting a battle of the bands competition, Peabody
and The Drugs are the entertainment for the night.
Realising that we have left Peabody locked in our storage trailer, we laugh
and begin to explore the town and have a little look around.
At the venue the Band Comp is pumping with lots of fresh talent and great up
and coming local bands.
Rosie from jjj is hosting the event and is doing her best to remain upbeat &
excited that unfortunately she’ll be spending a lot of time in the Drugs
company.
Peabody pump through a killer set with the Captain milking the sound for all
it’s worth, they preview a brand new song which sounded unlike anything they
’ve ever done, it actually sounded good.
The Drugs arrive for work in Ronald McDonald uniforms and open with our
single of the moment “ Was Sport better in the Seventies?” and continue to
pump out the hits for the kids of Port Macquarie.
With plenty of stage to cause havoc on there was no doubt that there would
be injuries, a collision with Ian resulted in me falling into a lighting rig
that cut through my sock and my ankle, (what is it with me and ankles). And
the look on Ian’s face when my foot connected with his torso was priceless,
hopefully I’ve caused a small tumour. David Live’s enthusiastic army rolls
across the stage seemed to take their toll during The Bold & the Beautiful.
Show over we head to the lounge of the RSL to sample some of the countries
finest cover musicians and watch old people dance like old people do.
The Body, The Drugs & friends head to a bar in town where things are a
little more lively & intoxicated, a very drunk Ian Baddley is spotted with a
lit cigarette on his ear.
Peabody party hard and Graham “the councilor” Trewin is sure to pay for his
excesive alcohol consumption tomorrow.
All other things spotted from this point on will have to be reserved for the
sealed members section only.
The trip back in surprisingly sedate with the majority sleeping off the
previous night giving me time to construct (recall) this diary.
To everyone who had a drink with us, had a laugh, or saw John Farnam –The
last Fucking Time.
Thanks & we’ll see you next time.
