Was Sport Really Better in the 70’s?
As the Drugs officially start the Was sport better in the 70’s tour, im not
really sure if this is the question we should be asking kids, I think will
the real question is, will The Drugs survive through this hectic and
potentially dangerous adventure? Only time will tell.
Once again the vicious cycle that is the Drugs, we are packed tightly into
the Silver Slit headed north to Toukley for tonights show.
Upon arriving at the beachcomber in Toukley we realise we have unfortunately
missed our friends 28Days who played here on Anzac Eve, im sure they would
have revived the old diggers memories of the front line with their live show
and knife weilding antics.
Once settled all the Drugs scatter in several directions like cockroaches in
a recently lit kitchen, I find David Live watching the sport report in the
upstairs sports bar, communication with him at this stage is completely
useless as he fails to blink for several minutes and makes a low pitched
moaning sound as the cricket scores scroll across the screen.
We meet up shortly after for dinner, and with several members of the Drugs
unit being vegans & vegetarians it’s always fun trying to get a meal. These
situations usually end up with food packets being scrutinised and cooking
vats being inspected.
Soon enough show time has arrived and we all clock in, put on our
uniforms and hit the stage. I have no idea what time it was but the free
drinks were no more.
I honestly believe there’s a no more dangerous place than onstage (and near
stage) with the Drugs, I’m sure the coalition troops would feel more secure
in Saddam City than onstage with us.
After the show Mark Tracks and I retire to our room with a bottle of vodka and
a deck of cards, im still not sure how we awoke in that comprimising
position.
Up early and off to Newcastle for tonights show, a few of us head off to
throw rocks at Daniel Johns house but can’t seem to find any houses with
wheel chair access. Maybe he’s had them removed.
So instead Ian Baddley and I deceide to turn our troublemaking attentions to
the disabled member of the Drugs, Mark Tracks. His new haircut looks pretty.
Arriving in Hamilton a suburb of Newcastle and tonights venue, the Norther
Star we head in for some food and drinks with our friends who we are playing
with tonight, Unpaid Dept.
At day two of the tour im already feeling unwell so I skip dinner tonight
and join the others later to watch Unpaid Debt kick out the hits with their
new guitarist on board cutting some hot licks.
We open the show with Sport and finish the show with an encore of
Prole, everything else in between I have zero memory of. Afterwards we catch
up with some of our friends & make new ones.
Way to early we head to bed, no sooner do we wake and head back to Sydney
for tonights show at the Parramatta Hotel.
A great venue tonight and I’m excited to see all of the bands performing.
Mesha kick it off with one of their first shows this year due to a busy
recording schedule and impress all who watch, next up is Fullride20 who get
the crowd excited for Unpaid Debt who are doing lots of show with us this
tour.
The show kicks off and all goes well, a highlight for me was hitting Ian
Baddley in the face with a tennis ball during Sons of Air Supply. A drunker
than usual Mark Tracks is always good for a laugh.
David Live was accompanied on stage by his new inflatable friend that seemed
to always join him in compromising positions.
So there you have it we survived the first innings, it’s off to Woolongong &
Blaxland next week.
Stay tuned for the second innings.
To everyone who had a drink with us, watch us have fun, had a laugh, or
molested our inflatable umpire.
Thanks & we’ll see you next time.
